Rollergirl Power

Cajun Rollergirls bring strength, athleticism, empowerment to southeast Louisiana

Story by: Aaron Looney
Houma, Louisiana

Down along the banks of Bayou Lafourche in southeast Louisiana, there’s a group of wheeled women causing quite a ruckus.

Recently entering its seventh year of operation, the Cajun Rollergirls is the only women’s flat-track roller derby league in the Houma/Thibodaux area. Sanctioned by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, or WFTDA, the team was ranked No. 122 in the WFTDA worldwide rankings, as of this writing.

The league includes women skaters who compete against leagues from throughout the Gulf South, as well as both women and men in the roles of referees, officials, coaches and volunteers.

In addition to the action on the track, the league works to make a positive impact on both the lives of its skaters and the communities of Louisiana’s Cajun Country. They do this by fostering the empowerment of women through promoting athleticism, sportsmanship and teamwork. Recently obtaining non-profit status, the all-volunteer league also supports the community through volunteer work and fundraising. Throughout the year, the league works with local charities to collect donations and raise awareness.

The Cajun Roller girls sported a 1-1 record going into their April 11 home game vs. the Pensacola Roller Gurlz. The league’s remaining 2015 schedule includes road games against teams in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Orleans and Gautier, Miss., along with home games against leagues from Lake Charles and Beaumont, Texas.
