TRAILS OF TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

TRAILS OF TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

by July 4, 2016
Story & photos by: Deborah L. Halstead Marble Falls, Texas My first ride as a newcomer to Texas was on FM 1431 between Round Rock and Marble Falls.  I immediately fell in love with the dips and turns and changing skyline!  Some of the curves are slightly off-camber, so pay attention to your line and speed. A right onto US 281 in Marble Falls, then a left onto Park Road 4 (just after crossing Honey Creek) will lead to Longhorn Caverns State Park.  A hideout of the Sam Bass Gang, and a Civilian Conservation Corps project, the caverns were opened to the public in the 1930s. On the right, further down the road is a beautiful view of Falkenstein Castle (available for weddings), a one quarter scale rendition utilizing plans of a German castle.  The picnic area mentioned at that point is reputed to be the BEST place to watch the sunset over SaddleBack Mountain. Park Road 4 continues through Inks Lake State Park, until it joins with State Highway 29.  A left at this juncture leads shortly to Rev. Jim’s Dam Pub at the foot of Buchanan Lake and Dam.  Their burger and fries are extraordinary! Ride On & Smile!
